Broadway is the home of an additional hit show, Disney’s The Lion King, as it continues its successful run with another limited production to be performed on Sunday 18th August 2024 in Minskoff Theatre, located in New York, New York. The show recounts the coming-of-age story of a little lion cub named Simba, who is fated by birthright to become the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The African savanna however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this pure and childlike plot, misfortune strikes when Simba's father Mufasa is killed as a result of the betrayal of his estranged uncle Scar, who plans to usurp the throne of these lands. The fledgling cub is forced to flee from his home and goes into hiding lasting a long period of time. While away in the forest, he runs into new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, who bring joy to Simba's lonely life and include him in their group. the young prince's happy-go-lucky mindset then takes a turn when Simba once more chances upon his childhood confidant Nala, who encourages him to return to the Pride Lands and requests him to retake his rightful place as king.

This complicated plot of loss, true friendship, and eventual redemption is amplified by the original film's music, created by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, partnered with additional songs and lyrics from the likes of Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have improved and elevated the quality of The Lion King not only in local performances, but also in international productions.

The Disney stage adaptation began on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show was an instant box office hit and was praised for its unique execution, leading to the show's move and reopening on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
