The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

Disney’s The Lion King tells the story of the struggles of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before long has no choice but to accept his fate of becoming the King of the Pride Lands due to the tragedy that befalls his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a supported leader by the people of the Pride Lands, faces immense jealousy from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces the lion cub into into exile for years, and where the Prince's long journey and his eventual homecoming to The Pride Lands and his rightful place as King.

Inspired by the previous 1994 film of the same name created by Disney, The play, The Lion King was beautifully adapted to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the unbelievable ensemble and crew. Its premiere in the 90s was the first of its kind, being lauded by fans at the time. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates The Lion King with unequivocal opinions in his review, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of Disney's The Lion King is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unquestionable in its creativity, uniqueness, and vigor. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the live version greatly upgrades nearly every aspect of the previous 90s cartoon film, from color and vibrancy and storytelling to Lebo M's compositions and the newly Africanized pop numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The stage adaptation was also met with the greatest reviews from audiences. A specific review specifically points to how this musical adaptation can accurately be called “The best Broadway has to offer”, expressing how he experienced that “the show was spectacular. It was full of color and the music would give you goosebumps. The costumes and masks really brought the roles to life.” Most audiences who have seen the shows over the previous 20 years proclaim that despite being an adaptation of a movie, the musical went above and beyond the original.

The approaching October’s production of Disney's The Lion King will be found in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Saturday 12th October 2024. Minskoff Theatre, being just as alive and creative as the show it is hosting with the venue's naturally planned stage setup and seating arrangement is considered by fans as the only choice to host The Lion King.
