The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The Lion King follows the life of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before long must suddenly accept his destiny of becoming the leader of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a beloved leader by the animals of the territory he rules, gets stabbed in the back by from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces the lion cub into to escape for years on end, and jumpstarts Simba's long journey and his subsequent homecoming to The Pride Lands and his destined rule as King.

Taken from the original 1994 film of the same title created by Disney, The play, The Lion King was beautifully adapted to the Broadway medium by director Julie Taymor and the breathtaking ensemble and crew. Its premiere in the 90s was a fresh addition to theater, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes The Lion King with very positive words in his posting, mentioning that “Julie Taymor's direction of Disney's The Lion King is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unquestionable in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. Exceeding expectations as a film follow-up, the stage showing greatly upgrades each and every component of the classic 90s cartoon movie, from design elements and plot to Lebo M's compositions and the freshly Africanized original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The stage adaptation was also met with the premier reviews from fans. A specific review specifically points to how this successful musical can accurately be considered “The best Broadway has to offer”, posting how he felt that “the show was spectacular. It was passionately put together and the music would give you goosebumps. The crafted 3D puppets really carried the animals to life.” Most viewers who have watched the shows over the past 2 decades can attest that despite being the same plot of a motion picture, Disney's The Lion King succeeded in surpassing expectations.

The upcoming October’s production of The Lion King will be performing in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Wednesday 30th October 2024. Minskoff Theatre, being equally inspiring and jaw-dropping as the musical with the venue's beautifully decorated lighting and sound design is considered by locals as the only option to host this famous show.
