The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The musical Lion King follows the fate of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before his time has no choice but to accept his role of succeeding as the King of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a supported leader by the people of his lands, gets stabbed in the back by from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces the young prince into into hiding for years, and where Simba's coming-of-age story and his subsequent return to his land and his rightful place as King.

Based off the late 1994 motion picture of the the very same name produced by Disney, The Lion King was accurately translated to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the incredible cast and crew. Its premiere in 1997 was a testament to its success, being lauded by fans at the time. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates The Lion King with very positive words in his posting, stating that “Julie Taymor's approach of this Broadway mainstay is a marvel, a successful adaptation unequaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the Broadway version greatly upgrades each and every component of the classic 1994 animated movie, from design elements and plot to Lebo M's compositions and the freshly Africanized original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The ongoing musical was also received with the top reviews from theatergoers. A specific review in reference makes mention of how this successful musical can appropriately be referred to as “The musical that beats them all”, posting how he felt that “the show was exceptional. It was passionately put together and the music would give you goosebumps. The costumes and masks really carried the characters to life.” Most viewers who have attended the shows over the previous 20 years can attest that despite being a second retelling of a film, the musical succeeded in surpassing expectations.

The upcoming May’s season of Disney's The Lion King will be performing in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Thursday 1st May 2025.
