The musical recounts the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a little lion cub named Simba, who is next in line to rule as the King of the Pride Lands succeeding his father. The African safari however is no stranger to political machinations, as even in this innocent and easygoing narrative, misfortune appears when the young prince's father Mufasa is murdered because of the actions of his wicked uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of the Pride Lands. The fledgling cub chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into exile for much of his early childhood. In his time away, he encounters new companions, Timon and Pumbaa, who encourage him to forget his past and live life on his own terms. His easygoing lifestyle then turns upside down when he once again chances upon his long-time companion Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and requests him to overthrow his abusive uncle.
This incredibly powerful story of heartbreak, unfound courage, and acceptance of duty is amplified by the iconic and emotional music, written by Elton John and Tim Rice.
