The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

Disney’s The Lion King shares the life of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before his time has no choice but to accept his destiny of leading as the leader of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a supported King by all of the Pride Lands, faces immense jealousy from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces the lion cub into into hiding for years on end, and this is where his coming-of-age story and his sudden return to his land and his seat on the throne.

Based off the original 1994 film of the the very same title created by Disney, The Lion King musical was accurately translated to the theater medium by director Julie Taymor and the impressive cast and creative team. Its debut in the 90s was the first of its kind, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety summarizes the Broadway premiere with unequivocal opinions in his posting, mentioning that “Julie Taymor's approach of this classic musical is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unquestionable in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. Exceeding expectations as a film follow-up, the stage showing enhances on each and every component of the hit 1994 cartoon movie, from design elements and narrative to Lebo M's writing and the freshly Africanized original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The stage adaptation was also met with the unrivaled reviews from theatergoers. One specifically points to how this musical adaptation can appropriately be referred to as “The best Broadway has to offer”, sharing how he perceived that “the show was fantastic. It was full of color and the score makes you feel all kinds of emotion. The crafted 3D puppets really carried the roles to life.” Most audiences who have seen the shows over the previous 2 decades can attest that despite being the same plot of a film, the iconic musical succeeded in surpassing expectations.

The upcoming October’s production of The Lion King will be hosted in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Sunday 6th October 2024.
