The show recounts the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a little lion cub called Simba, who is next in line to become the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The African territory however is no stranger to political machinations, as even in this innocent and easygoing plot, tragedy comes when the young lion's father Mufasa is murdered because of the betrayal of his wicked uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of these lands. The immature prince chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into hiding lasting a long period of time. While away in the forest, he runs into new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who bring joy to Simba's lonely life and include him in their group. His easygoing lifestyle then turns upside down when he once again encounters his childhood confidant Nala, who shares the plight of the people with him and requests him to retake his rightful place as king.
This complicated plot of loss, strong bonds, and acceptance of duty is enhanced by the familiar classic songs, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, supplemented with more music and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of the show not just in local performances, but also in Europe and Asia performances.
The original stage adaptation premiered on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show was an instant box office hit and was praised for its unique execution, ushering in the show's shift and beginnings on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
