The Cult Classic Movie

The movie was spearheaded by the co-directors Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, produced by the talented Don Hahn, written by visionaries Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. All the while, its original songs were inked by iconic composer Sir Elton John and skilled lyricist Tim Rice, with a score composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer.

The Lion King focuses on the adventures of Simba who is voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas. The story follows the young lion cub and sees him learn to overcome change and come to terms with his destiny as the ruler of the Pride Lands. In this timeless tale brought to life by Disney, Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar is voiced by Jeremy Irons. He makes a plan to take over Mufasa’s throne by leading father and son into a killer stampede of wildebeests. However, Scar’s plan goes south when Simba manages to escape, and only Mufasa is killed. When Simba returns as an adult (voiced by Matthew Broderick), he comes to reclaim his homeland from his wicked uncle with the help of his loyal sidekicks Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (voiced by Ernie Sabella). With these iconic characters, talented ensemble voice cast and epic soundtrack, the movie instantly won over the hearts of the masses and became lovingly known as a cult classic. Having been ranked as the highest-grossing animated movie in history, initially grossing a whopping $763.5 million, it was obvious that The Lion King was headed for greatness and success beyond the silver screen.

The Broadway Adaptation

The next logical step was to adapt this popular story into a Broadway spectacle. But, Disney’s decision to transfer The Lion King onto Broadway was met with skepticism. Could a story set in the depths of the African savanna with talking animals really work on the stage? The answer was a resounding yes as Disney transformed The Lion King into Broadway’s highest-grossing show in history.

The creative team behind the musical smash hit, including the incredible work of Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan, used a never-before seen mixture of puppetry, dance, and music to bring the movie to life on stage. The Broadway producer, director, and American Theater Hall of Famer Julie Taymor (“The Green Bird” “Spider-Man”) designed the original costumes and co-designed the masks and puppets along with the craftsmanship of designer Michael Curry. The talking animals who were loved on the screen were brought to life by actors wearing award-winning costumes. The team also employed puppetry techniques to mimic the movements and emotions of animals. The life-sized lion mask worn by actors taking on the role of Simba (Jason Raize) and Nala (Heather Headley) became iconic for their incredible detail. The intriticate costumes are just one of the reasons the production became known and loved as Broadway’s highest-grossing show of all time. The Lion King swept the Tony Awards in 1998, winning six categories, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design. In fact, Julie Taymor was the very first woman to receive a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical in theater history. No wonder she’s an inductee in the American Theater Hall of Fame!! “I think there’s something about theater that always wants to go forward, to push the boundaries of what’s been done before,” Julie Taymor said. She also admitted that, “Theater is about the collaboration and collective work of many artists.”

The Lion King’s iconic score composed by the Tony Award-winning songwriter Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice was adapted for the stage. Together, this dynamic duo created new music that integrated with the beloved classics. The blend of old and new has kept the story alive through generations of audiences while also giving voice to the characters’ inner thoughts and feelings. Fan favorites such as “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” were reimagined for the stage, meanwhile a live orchestra and dynamic vocals brought these songs to life.
