The musical narrates the coming-of-age story of a little lion cub named Simba, who is next in line to rule as the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The young Simba is forced to flee from his home and goes into exile for much of his early childhood. During this exile, he meets new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who live a worry-free lifestyle and influence him to do the same. the young prince's relaxed demeanor then takes a turn when he once more meets his childhood confidant Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and appeals to him to retake his rightful place as king.
This complicated plot of loss, true friendship, and eventual redemption is amplified by the familiar classic songs, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original songs, supplemented with added music and lyrics from other composers such as Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have served as the foundation of The Lion King not only in local performances, but also in international productions.
The Disney stage adaptation premiered on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was an instant box office hit and set a standard for contemporary theater, ending up to its move and reopening on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
