The story of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the little Prince Simba leads a free and easy life, before disloyalty is revealed because of the actions of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his desire to rule the Pride Lands and become King himself. The first part's course of occurrences leads to Simba's escape from The Pride Lands and the account of his ultimate return to retake his throne and his place as King.
The 1997 Broadway play, since its inception, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African civilization and historical texts given the play's setting. The narrative itself is actually taken from real African heroes and factual events – Simba actually equates to the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was justly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to earn a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, particularly design, which resulted in a faultless Broadway production of the show. The costumes alone are perfect representations of a few indigenous people in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s outfit in the show which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi fighters' outfits. Just like the late 1994 movie, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African roots, with the stage adaptation even putting in numbers with lyrics that are performed either partly or fully in African dialects such as Swahili and Zulu. Moreover, the African inspiration is also clearly seen in choreography, with several of the performances presenting the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.
The costume design, music, and superb acting all work in harmony to deliver an spectacular musical.
