The musical adaptation, The Lion King came on to the classical theater stage with a masterful technique; theater fans state that the show, ever since its debut, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and become more than the usual adaptation. With its usage and mix of dance, outfits, and especially 3D puppetry, the musical grew to a very well-defined performance matching up to to all previous and future musicals. Since the narrative of this stage adaptation features animals, specifically the young Lion Prince Simba and journey to becoming King of the Pride Lands, the hurdle for the creative team was to basically adapt a cartoon to live action without looking inauthentic. Julie Taymor, The Lion King’s director, embraced this challenge and similarly embraced the craft of utilizing puppets, skillfully using life-sized animal puppets onstage combined with outfits and music displaying African culture that dignified the famous play.
