The tale of Disney’s The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional region of the African savanna; set in The Pride Lands, the young Prince Simba is destined to succeed as King, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his impulse to take the throne and become ruler himself. The first half's sequence of incidents leads to Simba's exile from his home and the story of his eventual journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.
The Lion King, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African civilization and historical basis given the show's setting. The story itself is actually based on historical African warriors and real events – Simba actually equates to the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was aptly named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, particularly outfits used, which resulted in an accurate Broadway production of The Lion King. The regalia in particular are gracious representations of a few ethnic tribes in Africa, a portrayal of such is Simba’s costume in the musical which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi fighters' outfits. Just like the late 1994 film, the iconic musical score written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the stage adaptation even adding numbers with lyrics that are sung either partly or entirely in African dialects like Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also evident in dance numbers, with several of the numbers consistently featuring the grace of Bali-inspired movements.
The costume design, song composition, and lifelike stage design all blend together so well to deliver an magnificent musical.
